Arizona offers more than 100 specialty plate designs. Most cost an additional $25 each year, and $17 from most charitable specialty plate purchases and renewals goes to the designated organization.
Some plates have different fees or eligibility requirements. We’ll verify the plate before ordering.01 Standard Arizona License Plate Arizona’s standard plate issued with regular vehicle registration
Arizona’s standard plate is issued as part of a normal registration when no specialty or personalized option is selected. The state currently charges no additional plate-design fee for a standard random-number plate beyond the applicable registration transaction.
New vehicle or title transfer
After a qualifying title and registration transaction, ADOT mails the permanent plate, registration and tabs to the address on the record. The exact temporary document issued at the counter depends on the transaction.
02 Specialty & Charitable License Plates Sports, charities, military themes, education, communities and other Arizona designs
Arizona has more than 100 specialty plate designs, including professional sports, education, tribal communities, military/veteran themes, health causes, nonprofit organizations, local destinations and other Arizona programs.
Eligibility-based plates
Some specialty plates are available to anyone. Others require documentation proving eligibility, such as military service, a qualifying award, organization membership or another statutory requirement.
How the order works
- Choose the specialty plate you want.
- We verify the plate is available for your vehicle type and review any required eligibility documents.
- We process the order and applicable plate fees.
- Keep your current plate on the vehicle until the new plate arrives.
- ADOT manufactures and mails the new plate, registration and tab to the address on the vehicle record.
03 Personalized / Vanity Plates Choose custom letters and numbers for a standard or qualifying specialty plate
Most Arizona plate types can be personalized for an additional $25 annual personalization fee. A personalized specialty plate generally carries both the specialty fee and personalization fee.
Character rules
- The maximum number of characters varies by plate design.
- Letters, numbers and allowable spacing are used; punctuation and other symbols are not accepted as ordinary personalization characters.
- A disability symbol uses one of the available character positions on a personalized plate.
- You must explain the intended meaning/message of your requested combination on the application.
- Availability does not guarantee final approval; personalized plates remain subject to MVD review.
Bring a few choices
We can check requested combinations in the system, but another customer may already have your first idea. Having several choices is dramatically more efficient than standing at the counter attempting to invent your identity seven-ish characters at a time.
04 Military, Veteran & Other Restricted Plates Plate designs that require proof of service, award, status or eligibility
Arizona offers a variety of military, veteran and other eligibility-based plates. The documents required depend on the specific plate, so bring the records that prove the qualifying status.
Examples of documents that may be relevant
- DD-214 or other discharge/service documentation.
- Military identification or official award documentation.
- VA eligibility documentation for certain veteran benefits.
- Organization or program eligibility documents for restricted non-military plates.
05 Disability Plates & Placards Parking privileges for qualifying permanent or temporary disabilities
Arizona disability parking plates and placards allow use of designated accessible parking spaces when the qualifying person is the driver or passenger. The required disability application must include the appropriate medical certification.
Disability Plate
- For a qualifying permanent disability.
- Vehicle must be registered/leased by the disabled person or qualifying guardian.
- Standard disability plates have no additional plate-design fee; postage/handling applies.
- Many specialty plates can include the disability symbol.
Portable Placard
- Issued to the qualifying person rather than a specific vehicle.
- Permanent Arizona placards do not expire.
- Temporary placards are valid for six months and require new certification if still needed.
- Placards are issued at no state placard fee.
Deaf / Hard of Hearing alert plate
Arizona also offers Deaf/Hard of Hearing alert plates and placards that notify law enforcement and emergency responders. These do not provide disability parking privileges.
06 Lost, Stolen, Damaged or Faded Plate Replacement Replace an unreadable or missing Arizona plate and update the registration record
If your Arizona plate is damaged, faded, lost or stolen, MVD offers a replacement plate process. The current state replacement-plate fee is $5 plus applicable postage/handling.
Damaged / Illegible Plate
ADOT replaces the plate with the same number/letter combination when the plate is damaged.
Lost / Stolen Plate
For security, ADOT issues a new plate number. The old number is not reissued as the replacement.
Stolen plate?
ADOT instructs customers to report a stolen plate to local law enforcement before requesting the replacement.
What happens next
The replacement metal plate is mailed along with an updated registration and tab. Bring your identification and vehicle/plate information so we can locate the correct record and process the replacement.
07 Transfer a Plate or Change Plate Type Move eligible plate credit or keep personalization while changing the plate design
Arizona plates generally stay with the owner rather than automatically transferring to the buyer of a vehicle. Depending on the plate and registration record, an existing plate or registration credit may be moved to another qualifying vehicle.
Changing the background but keeping personalization
ADOT allows customers to keep an existing personalized plate number while changing plate type when the requested combination fits the new plate and remains eligible. New specialty and/or personalization fees apply.
08 Digital License Plates Arizona-approved electronic plate display devices
Arizona permits approved digital license plate devices. These electronic displays show the assigned plate number and can display certain authorized status messages.
How digital plates work
- Purchase an approved digital plate device from the provider.
- Order the qualifying Arizona plate design/registration through the MVD process.
- Follow the device manufacturer’s installation and activation instructions.
- The assigned plate number remains displayed on the device.
- Personalized and qualifying specialty plate designs can be used with digital display.
- The device can display status messages such as invalid registration or a plate-detached/stolen condition.
- The hardware/service cost is set by the digital plate provider, not MVD.
Your plate has to be visible, not merely technically attached somewhere.
Arizona law requires the plate to be securely mounted, legible and displayed in the proper location. Decorative frames are where a surprisingly large number of people manage to turn “I like chrome” into a traffic issue.
Motor vehicle, motorcycle, trailer and semitrailer plates are displayed on the rear as required by Arizona law.
The bottom of the plate must be at least 12 inches above the ground.
The plate must be securely fastened so it does not swing and must remain clearly readable.
The state name at the top must remain visible. Covers/devices may not obscure characters, tabs or issuing jurisdiction from any angle unless specifically authorized.
Things worth knowing before committing your personality to sheet metal.
