🏁 Initial Registration: Getting Your Vehicle on the Road
Whether you’re a new resident or just bought a previously owned vehicle, registering it in Arizona is a specific, step-by-step process. At EZ Title & Registration, we handle the paperwork and the fees so you can get your tags without the MVD headache.
Registration must be completed within 15 days of purchase or as soon as you become an Arizona resident.
Step 1: Emissions Testing
Before you visit our office, check if your vehicle needs a "smog check."
Who needs it? Most vehicles kept in the Phoenix (Maricopa County) or Tucson (Pima County) areas that are 5 model years or older.
Exemptions: New vehicles (first 5 years), vehicles made in 1966 or older, and fully electric vehicles are exempt.
Pro-Tip: The results are sent electronically to the MVD. You don’t need the paper certificate to see us, but the system must show a "PASS" before we can issue tags.
Step 2: VIN Inspection
In many cases, an out-of-state transfer or a title-less vehicle requires a Level I Physical Inspection.
We perform these on-site at all our locations.
We verify the VIN plate, matching numbers, and federal safety labels to ensure the vehicle’s identity is legal and accurate.
Step 3: Calculate Your Fees
Arizona’s Vehicle License Tax (VLT) is based on the original MSRP of the vehicle, not the current market value.
The Math: It’s roughly 60% of the manufacturer’s base retail price, reduced by 16.25% for every year since it was first registered.
The Extras: Expect an $8 registration fee, a $4 title fee, and a small air quality fee.
📋 What to Bring to EZ Title
To complete your registration in one visit, bring the following:
Proof of Ownership: The original Arizona title or out-of-state title.
If you are still making payments: Bring your current out-of-state registration.
Application: The Title and Registration Application (we also have copies in our office).
Government ID: Your Arizona or out-of-state driver license.
Arizona Insurance: Your policy must be active and compliant with Arizona's minimum liability limits ($25k/$50k/$15k).
Lease Paperwork: If the vehicle is leased, we need a Power of Attorney from the leasing company.
Why Choose EZ Title?
Instant Temporaries: Leave our office with a legal temporary plate and registration while your metal plate is mailed to you.
Expert Troubleshooting: If your out-of-state title has an "Electronic Lien," we’ll help you navigate the state-to-state transfer packet.
No Appointments: Just walk in. Most initial registrations are completed in 15 to 20 minutes.
